What is PMS? How common is PMS? How do I know if I'm experiencing PMS?

The symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) may be both emotional and physical. They can include, weepiness, sleeplessness, mood swings, headaches, pelvic pain, breast tenderness, bloating and irritability.

These symptoms may be considered PMS when they are severe and experienced the week before your period begins. If these symptoms interfere with your normal functioning, cause discomfort or cause any concern, you should mention them to your healthcare provider. Also make sure to note and track any symptoms that you believe could be associated with your menstrual cycle.

When you track them, you can see their frequency, whether or not they are related to menstrual cycle events and you can see if any strategies you are using are helping to alleviate them. You can also better plan important events around them to limit their impact on your life.
